FACELIFT FOR MEN: BECAUSE MEN ALSO WANT TO LOOK YOUNG!

In recent times, procedures like facelifts for men are more popular, being considered the perfect solution to diminish the signs of ageing. Far gone are those days when plastic surgery was exclusive for women and men would not dare to go under the knife! Because, what man would not want a facial rejuvenation to look younger and better?

Nowadays, plastic surgery uses advanced techniques that allow men to look rejuvenated in a subtle and natural way, preserving the masculinity of their features. The real goal is to age in a graceful manner or looking better for your age.

So let’s take a closer look at this facial cosmetic surgery designed for men.

What Is a Face Lift?

Facelift surgery is specially designed to target the ageing signs of the face. If you have sagging skin and wish to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles in those areas, this cosmetic procedure might be perfect for you.

In the traditional facelift procedure, a surgical incision is made behind the hairline, above the ear. It comes down in front of it, round the lobe, then up behind the ear, heading back towards the scalp.

Then, the skin is carefully separated from the underlying tissues and lifted like a flap. The excess fat is removed, the muscles are tightened, and any excess skin is cut before lifting the skin upwards and backwards, stitching it up.

This procedure will give you a younger face contour with a smooth skin. It involves a reposition of the soft tissues that may have lost volume due to ageing, plus removing extra skin with poor elasticity. No more wrinkles or loose skin!

What is the Difference Between a Facelift for Men and a Facelift for Women?

Even though the surgical principle is the same, there are key differences in this procedure when facelift is done for men or women.

There are gender-specific anatomical differences that must be considered. Men usually have more prominent facial volume mass and stronger skeletal structures, which are harder to manipulate. Also, men have thicker skin and relatively less subcutaneous fat, which tends to be more fibrous.

Additionally, there are differences in jaw sizes and face shape. So, the facelift for men is a delicate art where the main goal is to preserve the angularity and masculinity of men’s features while enhancing the facial contour!

On top of that, the short hairline of most men makes the incision type and position critical so as not to disrupt the hair follicles or generate excessive scarring that prevents the hair from growing back. The aim will always be shorter and less noticeable scars!

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery?

Before your male’s facelift, you will have several consults with your plastic surgeon. He can walk you through the process, listen to your appearance goals, explaining the different male facelift procedures and the risks involved. Also, you will need to have clearance from your general physician.

The surgery is traditionally done under general anesthesia. Although, in less invasive cases, it could be done under local anesthesia and sedation for you to feel comfortable. This allows for a faster recovery time and quicker discharge.

How is the Recovery from a Men’s Facelift?

A facelift procedure is not really painful but may be uncomfortable due to the feeling of “tightness.” You will wake up with dressings on your face and neck for support, as well as drainage tubes in some cases. Also, expect substantial swelling and bruising that can last up to 2-3 weeks to fade and subside.

In the first days, you should rest in a semi-sitting position with your head propped up. Also, avoid bending or doing sudden head movements. You must go to the checkups with your surgeon to have your stitches removed between 7-10 days, if not self-dissolving sutures are used. In any case, you should be very careful when washing and brushing your hair near the incisions.

You will have to wait nearly eight weeks before engaging in any strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure. Also, you will need up to 12 weeks for internal bruising to completely heal.

Other Options for a Men’s Facelift

In many cases, additional procedures can be considered to improve the overall appearance of the face. Liposuction of the neck or chin area could be done, as well as procedures to enhance the mid-portion of the face, like fat transfer or blepharoplasty for a periorbital rejuvenation. Also, non-surgical treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, or laser skin resurfacing could round off the overall result.

There are also some variations of the surgical facelift, like the Deep Plane Lift. This procedure is used in cases of severe ageing, where there is a lift of the Superficial Muscle Aponeurotic System (SMAS) that allows doing a resuspension of the deep facial tissues.

Also, in younger men with fine lines and wrinkles, a Minilift or S- Facelift could be considered. This less invasive procedure allows a faster recovering time and less scarring due to smaller incisions. The incision will be above and anterior to the ear, with no extension behind it.

Either way, the procedures will be carefully chosen with your surgeon so that you can achieve the best possible results tailored to your case, goals, and budget!

Am I a Good Candidate for a Male Facelift?

You must not take this procedure lightly. The recovery process takes patience, and even though you will have long-lasting results (up to a decade), you will see the final results after nearly a year.

However, do not be discouraged at all. If you are a middle-aged man or older with valid esthetic concerns and realistic expectations, you could definitely consider facial plastic surgery!
