STOMACH LIPOSUCTION: THE SOLUTION FOR A PERFECTLY SCULPTED ABDOMEN

Stomach liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing excess fat located in the abdominal area.

This minimally invasive body contouring solution removes fat cells (adipocytes) permanently from the abdomen. It has become widely popular and can also be done with other plastic surgeries, including breast reduction, tummy tuck, and liposuction of other body fat areas.

Even though you may have your mind already set on having liposuction, your cosmetic surgeon will have the last word. At the end of the day, there are many surgical options available.

The decision will depend on your history of weight loss, age, amount of fat removal, and skin elasticity. So, how does it work? What is the difference between abdominal liposuction and a tummy tuck? Which one is better for you? Keep on reading to find out.

LIPOSUCTION AND STOMACH IMPERFECTIONS

Abdominal liposuction is an effective solution to remove excess fat in the middle section or abdomen.

The abdomen is a particular area of the body that requires great surface and in-depth anatomical knowledge from the surgeon. This, combined with an impeccable surgical technique, will give you a great outcome.

On the surface, the stomach is divided into four regions:

  • Epigastrium or upper abdomen.
  • Hypogastrium or lower abdominal part.
  • Peri-umbilical region. The area around the navel. This part must always be treated to avoid the appearance of a doughnut.
  • The mesogastrium. Also called the waist. This part links the upper and lower abdomen.

When an abdomen is too large, or the patient wishes to address excess fat in other areas of the body, the surgeon needs to perform back-to-back surgeries within a reasonable period of time.

You may feel tempted to get all the fat out in one surgery. However, the maximum amount of fat that can be easily removed without increasing the risk of complications is between six and eight pounds. So, always put safety before beauty!

WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS OF STOMACH LIPOSUCTION?

Stomach liposuction is effective for patients who have an excess of fat on their belly. It is also an excellent procedure for both women and men who wish to get rid of fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise.

This phenomenon of very localized belly fat tends to increase with age. However, the patients should not have significant excess skin or marked muscle relaxation. Otherwise, it is necessary to turn to abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) to obtain a flat stomach.

Excess skin can be a problem after important weight loss or pregnancy. In this case, a tummy tuck helps to remove sagging skin and excess fat from the abdomen. This method can truly sculpt the abdomen.

Unlike the tummy tuck, liposuction will not help you eliminate stretch marks or tighten the abdominal muscles. Also, remember that stomach liposuction is not a weight loss solution!

Indeed, the plastic surgeon recommends this procedure when the patient is close to his ideal weight (30% at least). It can be beneficial once the person has reached his weight-loss goals.

BEFORE THE LIPOSUCTION

An initial consultation is necessary to allow the cosmetic surgeon to learn more about the patient’s history, including medical conditions that may contraindicate surgery.

He will also make recommendations about certain medications or herbal supplements you may be on. Blood thinners, aspirin, alcohol, and ibuprofen should be stopped the day’s prior surgery to diminish bleeding. Also, you must quit smoking because it can slow your healing process.

It is also crucial that the surgeon knows your goals and expectations regarding the cosmetic procedure in this consultation. He will also perform a complete examination of the problematic fat areas of your body.

Depending on your weight and skin elasticity, the surgeon can discuss possible outcomes and surgical options specially tailored for you. After all, you must have realistic expectations. Otherwise, you may feel like the surgery was a complete failure.

Finally, the surgeon should walk you through the process and answer all the questions you may have. Also, he should inform you about the possible risks associated with the intervention.

During this consultation, the specialist will also give you a detailed estimate of the cost.

DURING THE STOMACH LIPOSUCTION

The stomach liposuction lasts between one and three hours. It is treated as a walk-in-walk-out surgery unless the patient has other surgical procedures or extensive liposuction in multiple areas.

This procedure is done under general anaesthetic or using an epidural. With regional anaesthesia, you will be conscious but numbed from the waist down so that you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.

The plastic surgeon makes small incisions of 2 to 3 mm under the fold of the groin, the pubis, or the navel. This helps to hide the scars as much as possible in the natural creases of the body.

For tumescent liposuction, the surgeon will inject a mixture of saline solution, local anesthetic, and epinephrine. This solution allows to numb the area and limit the risk of hematomas by shrinking blood vessels. Also, it helps to dislodge the fat layer and separate it from the surrounding tissues.

Then, the surgeon introduces a cannula through the skin incisions. This is a fine hollow tube with a rounded tip and perforated ends. This device helps break up the fat cells using high-frequency vibrations (VASER lipo), a weak laser pulse, or a high-pressure water jet.

The plastic surgeon will connect the cannula to a negative pressure suction system (vacuum). Then, using a back and forth motion, he will loosen the fat and suck it out. He can also choose a thin cannula connected to a syringe that works with a plunger in case of a moderate amount of fat.

At the end of the stomach liposuction, the surgeon will drain any excess blood and fluids. Then, he will close the incisions and apply a bandage to the treated areas.

THE RECOVERY

Depending on the volume of fat aspirated, you could feel some pain of varying intensity. But do not worry! Painkillers will be prescribed to relieve the discomfort.

After the stomach liposuction, the person will have to wear a support corset or compression garment. This will support the tissues and reduce the risk of bruising and swelling. Also, after the surgery, it is normal to feel tired. You can resume work and normal activities after three to seven days.

The surgeon will recommend avoiding strenuous activity, including sports, for up to 4 to 6 weeks (but walking and general movement should be fine).

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

As with any surgery, there is the risk of bleeding, clots, infections, and scarring. However, some specific complications related to this cosmetic procedure are:

  • Numbness. You may feel numbness in the affected area, but it usually disappears in a few weeks or months at the most.
  • Contour irregularities. You could present with undercorrections or a wavy or jagged impression on the surface of your skin. This can make the skin appear less smooth and toned.
  • Fluid accumulation. Also called seromas, these temporary pockets of fluid appear on small areas where you had liposuction. This fluid buildup can happen if you don’t follow your doctor’s recommendations about the compression garment and drainage massages.

LET’S TALK ABOUT RESULTS

The results won’t be noticeable right away. If anything, you may look bloated and bigger because of the swelling and bruising.

Once the swelling subsides, you will start to see the results: Fewer fat bulges and a perfectly contoured silhouette! Give it between 3 to 6 months.

Also, you may notice some loose skin over the treated areas at the beginning. However, you have to give the skin time to retract properly.

You could have an additional skin-tightening effect if you choose Vaser lipo. This technique stimulates collagen and elastin production, giving you a more toned and firmer appearance. However, in rare cases, you may need a tummy tuck to tighten up the skin.

The results are not necessarily long-lasting. Even though the fat cells are permanently removed, the remaining ones could increase in size and volume. So you should maintain a healthy lifestyle following diet and doing regular exercise.

In the end, it’s up to you to maintain your new slender figure!

HOW MUCH STOMACH LIPOSUCTION COSTS?

The surgeon’s skills and the assurance of obtaining the desired results should be considered first.

Liposuction surgery cost depends also on the amount of body fat removed. Every procedure is personal to you and your needs, and so is the cost.
