J.Isla – Father of a child suffering from a rare disease (Hospital Sant Joan de Déu)
I would like to thank the people of the hospital Sant Joan de Déu. I discovered Bego on a course for patients that they organized and it seemed incredible to me what they were doing.
They told me: ‘You have to meet Dr. Serrano.’ They brought me here some months ago and I got to know the hospital…this hospital really is different. I don’t know if those who are inside realize it but those who come from outside, and unfortunately we have seen many hospitals, we realize that something is different here, it’s something intuitive. I simply wanted to give thanks to the people at the hospital for all the work you do, because you really believe that the patient can be incorporated into the clinical routine.
Inessa (mother of Iván) – A patient with complete paralysis of one hand (Hospital Sant Joan de Déu)
My name is Inessa, I have come from Minsk (Belarus) and I have brought my 15 year old son Iván to be treated at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. My son is a cancer patient. He received treatment in our country. In the first place, they operated on him. But, unfortunately, during the operation they damaged a nerve and his left hand lost its basic functionality. We searched for a solution for several months until by accident, as is often the case, I found information about the hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona.
I think that when there is no access to certain treatments, for example, surgical or oncological in your home country, in this hospital you will find possibly the best help, and very attentive doctors that will help you and solve your problem and the problem of your son and daughter.
Iván had an almost complete paralysis of the upper limb because they had performed surgery on a malignant tumour on the braquial plexus nerves, nerves which extend from the spinal cord and allow the upper limb and even the hand to move and give sensitivity. Iván could use his shoulder and elbow to a certain extent but had complete paralysis of his hand. After the operation that was carried out, Iván will be able to use his hand for functions that are basic but necessary for everyday life.
