Press Release 11 February 2013 (La Vanguardia, Spanish newspaper with a circulation of 230,000 copies per day)

Brachytherapy of the prostate: more than 1400 patients treated with excellent results (IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital )

The IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital is a center of reference, not only in treatments carried out with radiotherapy, but also in the treatment of cancer. The IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital in Barcelona  is  a pioneer center  in Spain, and one of the first centers internationally. It has extensive experience in brachytherapy applied to prostate cancer. A great expert from the country, Doctor Benjamí Guix, radiation oncologist and medical director of the IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital in Barcelona, reveals the successes achieved thanks to this innovative cancer treatment:

“Brachytherapy of the prostate involves irradiating the prostate directly inside. Since radiation affects a very localized area, it does not cause damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Normally, the age of the patient is between 50 and 88 years. One of the great benefits of brachytherapy is that it prevents urinary incontinence and preserves sexual function because it does not produce sexual impotence. “

IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital started to develop brachytherapy of the prostate in 1999. In the long term, more than 98% of patients are cured.

Brachytherapy of the prostate does not present the risks of traditional surgery and has the advantage of being a short treatment. It does not cause side effects and the patient normally tolerates it well. In addition, it prevents urinary incontinence and does not produce sexual impotence. After a few days the patient can continue his life normally.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RADIOTHERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER:

With local anesthesia, needles containing radioactive sources are placed inside the prostate. The needles are removed permanently leaving the radioactive sources. It is a painless technique that does not cause great inconvenience to the patient. Brachytherapy has very few side effects.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia (with a circulation of 230,000 copies per day), Doctor Benjamí Guix, director of the IMOR Radiotherapy Hospital in Barcelona, answers several questions about the effectiveness of radiotherapy (brachytherapy) for prostate cancer.

The average age of patients who decide to perform radiotherapy for prostate cancer (brachytherapy) is around 65 years. However, it is increasingly common for younger patients to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Early diagnosis greatly improves the results obtained: the treatment becomes more effective and with fewer side effects.

Radiotherapy for prostate cancer (brachytherapy) treatment is effective from the first day it is applied. However, to check the effectiveness, the patient must wait a short time. Periodic blood tests should be performed to determine the level of PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen). It is recommended that the first test be performed the first six months after undergoing prostate brachytherapy. Over the next five years, the value of PSA should decrease gradually.

A relapsed prostate cancer patient can undergo with excellent results what is called lifesaving brachytherapy. It is a very focused brachytherapy with few side effects. Following this technique, there is a high probability that the tumor will not appear again.

Brachytherapy of the prostate is achieved through the combined efforts of a multidisciplinary team of approximately 10 professionals. The team is made up of anesthesiologists, urologists, physicists, technicians and specialists in radiotherapy. The medical procedure lasts an hour and a half. It is performed in an operating room. The scalpel is not used. This is an outpatient procedure; the patient can go home the same day.
