Anyone can be bothered with a double chin. After all, it’s not exclusive to older people or those who are overweight. Maybe it just runs in the family, and you were unfortunate enough to inherit that trait.

Also, you could be among those people who, no matter how many lunges and abs do, just can’t get rid of some stubborn pockets of fat. So, maybe you find yourself with annoying fatty tissue in your stomach or thighs you wish it wasn’t there.

But don’t worry! You don’t have to go under the knife to fix these troublesome details. There are other aesthetic treatments available besides liposuction and surgery. You could get fat dissolving injections!

Yes, you heard right. Essentially, this fat therapy involves a series of injections that can indeed “melt” fat. This is a very innovative, simple, non-invasive option for those who want a little twitch here or there to get the body shape of their dreams.

Beware, though, this is not a weight solution. It is meant to eliminate fat in small areas.

So, are you intrigued and would like to give fat dissolving injections a try? Keep reading to find out everything about this innovative technique.

What Are Fat Dissolving Injections?

Fat dissolving injections are made up of plant-based compounds that break down the membranes of fat cells beneath the skin.

The main compound is a derivative of deoxycholic acid, which is an important bile acid. This substance, present naturally in the human liver, is an acid that facilitates fat digestion, aka fat emulsification, in the intestine.

Hence, deoxycholic acid works by destroying the fat cell membranes, causing them to become unstable and liquefy, releasing the lipids within. Then, these fatty compounds are eliminated naturally through the lymphatic system in a period of weeks.

Fat dissolving injections can treat almost all fat deposits, but they must be small, localized areas to work correctly.

The most popular treatment areas include the double chin, stomach, thighs, and arms.

Am I A Right Candidate?

This non-surgical option removes stubborn fat deposits. It is ideal for chin fat removal and pockets of fat around the abdomen/stomach area.

Generally, this treatment is not suitable for patients over 60 years or clinically overweight patients with a BMI over 25.

Hence, this is not a weight loss solution! For the procedure to be effective, you must be near your ideal body weight (within one stone) and around 3cm of pinchable fat.

It is an excellent non-surgical treatment for people who have a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly, but who are struggling to tone specific body areas.

Younger patients typically do very well because they are less likely to have excess, sagging skin under the chin and have better skin elasticity. Remember that injections can do nothing to improve skin elasticity; they only target fat.

The Benefits

Fat dissolving injections are safe and effective. They are fastly becoming a popular body contouring tool to target specific problem areas.

  • They are a minimally invasive alternative to liposuction.
  • There are fewer risks because they don’t require a general anaesthetic.
  • There is minimal downtime after treatment. Also, they are less painful!
  • There are no incisions or stitches involved, so scarring is out of the question.
  • The fat cells are permanently destroyed with long-lasting results.

How Is the Procedure?

This fat dissolving treatment consists of injecting the solution into localized fat deposits.

First of all, your doctor will examine you during the pre-treatment consultation and mark out the problematic areas to map injection sites.

Then, the deoxycholic acid is mixed with lidocaine (anaesthetic) before injection, or your doctor will apply a cream with a local anaesthetic to numb the skin. The idea is to make the procedure as pain-free as possible and eliminate any discomfort you may experience.

Afterward, your doctor will inject at various points across your problem area using a “fan technique” to ensure the site is fully covered.

The whole process can take nearly 15 minutes. The number of injections and sessions depends on your particular case. However, you most probably will be scheduled for two or three sessions, administered 3-4 weeks apart.

Although, in some cases, it is better to wait more time before considering a new set of injections. After all, the ‘fat flushing’ process may take around 6-8 weeks. Ultimately, it will be your doctor’s decision.

Recovery: The Do‘s and Don’ts

Right after your treatment, you are allowed to go home.

Even though the procedure doesn’t hurt, you will present some swelling that can take two to three weeks to subside completely and get to baseline.

Sometimes, the treated area may feel tender to touch, numb, or even itchy. However, these side effects only last 1-3 days. Redness is also pretty common.

The inflammation is not pleasant, but swelling means the medication is working properly to dissolve fat!

The injections cause a local inflammatory reaction so that you may experience important swelling during the first five days post-treatment. This can be controlled using cool pads frequently.

However, your doctor will advise you against using OTC anti-inflammatory medication to manage any side effects due to how the treatment works. They could render the treatment ineffective and directly impact the outcome.

For some patients, sleeping the first days in a semi-sitting position with the head propped on two pillows and a bandage around the chin can be very helpful in case of chin fat removal. In most patients, swelling typically peaks at 24 hours post-treatment and then gets better.

Also, do not apply any makeup to the treated area within a 12-hour period and avoid direct exposure to sunlight and heat sources like saunas. You should avoid engaging in strenuous activities or exercise for seven days.

Note that with these forms of injections treatments, you do require a bit of downtime, although it is not very painful or complicated. Prepare yourself to take it easy and rest for three to five days.

The Results

Fat dissolving injections allow you to destroy the fat cells for good. Hence, they are a long-term solution provided that you don’t have important weight fluctuations, maintain a healthy diet, and exercise regularly.

You have to wait between 2-3 weeks before you start to see a reduction in fatty deposits around the chin and jawline. However, younger patients most probably will be able to see results after a longer period of time.

For larger areas, though, you will begin to notice the effects after 2-3 weeks but should allow up to 8 weeks for the final results.

Also, you will need 2-6 treatments to achieve your desired outcome. For most patients, the second treatment is often the turning point, and when they start to see favorable changes.

It has been reported that between 75 and 90 percent of patients maintain their results for five years or more. So, ultimately, how long the results last is up to you and having good habits.

Let’s Talk about Kybella

Kybella is the new cosmetic injectable drug designed to treat “submental fat” (the fat pocket under the chin) as instructed by the FDA.

It is made of sodium deoxycholate, a compound the body turns into deoxycholic acid. This compound is slightly different from Aqualyx, which is a derivative of deoxycholic acid. However, both compounds work the same way: breaking down fat.

The drug is the first (and currently only) injectable treatment approved by the FDA since 2015 to contour the jaw and double chin removal.

It is a natural compound derived from soybean, safe for human use, and is naturally broken down by the body over time.

For each treatment, your doctor will use between one and three vials, depending on how much submental fat one has.

This substance is already being studied in an off-label way in the anterior bra-fat area and upper knees. So, although larger areas have been ruled out, like the abdomen (too much product and needles would be required), other small pockets of fat could be treated with Kybella.

Kybella Belkyra fat dissolving injections

What is the difference between Kybella, Belkyra, and Aqualyx?

Although it may be confusing for most, the answer is pretty simple.

All products work the same. All of them are related to deoxycholic acid and will give you great results. It all comes down to a matter of jurisdictions and cosmetic regulations.

Aqualyx is not currently FDA-approved for use in the United States. Hence, you will only see this injectable in Europe and some other countries.

On the other hand, BELKYRA, the equivalent in the United States of KYBELLA, is Health Canada approved. Conversely, KYBELLA is FDA approved, and both are safe for clinical cosmetic use.
