Chin Fillers

Chin Fillers: Say Goodbye to Your Weak Chin!

In this Botox and dermal fillers era, you may have heard about chin fillers. Thanks to social media and the obsession with selfies, chin augmentation procedures have gained popularity among men and women.

Indeed, dermal fillers are not only useful to decrease fine lines and wrinkles; they go far beyond sculpting your face and redefining your features. And since the chin is one of the main components of our face, it can throw away the whole facial harmony.

So, if you have a problematic relationship with your face due to a weak chin, this procedure could be the perfect solution! It is a quick and easy option to subtly reshape and remodel the chin and create a more youthful appearance.

No surgery, no pain, and almost zero downtime!

Too good to be true? Keep reading and find out why dermal filler injections are the little miracle workers in today’s cosmetic industry.

What is a Chin Filler Treatment?

chin filler treatment, also known as a non-surgical chin augmentation, involves dermal fillers to contour and reshape your chin. Indeed, chin fillers are an excellent way to instantly give you a chiseled profile.

Most dermal fillers used are hyaluronic acid-based gel substances. This molecule can hold 1000 times its weight in water. And since hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced in our bodies, it is reabsorbed in time and has a low risk of side effects.

However, chin fillers are generally thicker and stiffer than fillers used for the lips. After all, they are supposed to replicate bone density. However, the dermal filler product used under the skin should have a gentler texture to blend well with the subcutaneous tissues.

Also, when injected under the skin, dermal fillers go beyond merely adding volume. They can stimulate your own collagen production, giving your skin a plumped and tighter appearance capable of smoothing lines and wrinkles.

Why Should You Consider Chin Fillers?

As we age, we suffer some bone loss. Hence, our chin and jaw shrink, and jowls and saggy necks appear. With time, the chin becomes shorter and has less projection, and the mid-face gets heavier. Also, the chin crease gets deeper, and jowls develop to the side of the chin. The result? A smaller, hooked, unflattering chin.

The ageing process is truly unforgiven! Unfortunately, this happens both in men and women over the ’40s and ’50s.

On the other side, you might be young (and beautiful) but facing the painful truth behind a naturally-given weak chin as a family trait.

Whichever your case, a small chin can weaken your jawline and accentuate your nose in a bad way. However, a more prominent chin could make you look angry, so there is a delicate balance!

When it comes to chin fillers, the most important thing is to find an experienced doctor with a good eye for facial proportions, who tries to fulfill your goals and expectations before injecting.

What Are the Chin Filler’s Benefits?

Dermal fillers are injected into the chin at various strategic points to:

  • Lengthen a short chin (visible from the front) to achieve a natural and aesthetic appearance. Elongating the chin even by a few millimeters gives the illusion of a less round face.
  • Improve the chin’s projection (visible from a side view) to reshape a weak chin or recessive jaw (micrognathia) where the chin stops too short compared to the lips. Also, the angle between the eyebrows, nose, and chin should be around 165-175 degrees. If this angle is less, then the chin needs more projection.
  • Reduce the chin crease (visible from the front and lateral views). The ‘C’ shaped deep crease that many patients show on their chins as they get older.
  • Increase or decrease the width of the bottom of the chin. Women aim for a rounded chin that blends naturally, whereas men look best with a strong, chiseled, square chin.
  • Erase chin dimples and fill in sunken areas like the pre-jowl sulcus (the crease where the cheeks meet the chin).
  • Recede an overly prominent chin to improve facial harmony.

To sum up, chin fillers add definition and more volume to the chin, creating a more balanced facial profile.

Don’t Forget About the Rest of the Face!

The chin shouldn’t be treated in isolation. Any treatment plan should consider the rest of the face, especially the lateral jawline. Hence, for a guaranteed harmoniously defined lower face, the combination of chin and jawline fillers is ideal under a personalized treatment. And when adding cheeks fillers, your doctor can create the coveted heart-shaped face in women.

Also, chin fillers may be frequently combined with non-surgical rhinoplasty and with liposuction of a double chin. First, the fat under the chin is removed with liposuction, and the area is later improved with fillers.

Before The Chin Filler Treatment

Before your non-surgical chin augmentation, you will have a consultation to discuss what the procedure entails, your aesthetic goals, and the risks and complications. Also, the first consultation helps decide if you qualify for the procedure.

But don’t worry, almost anyone can have dermal fillers to improve their jawline or chin profile. You just need to have some bone structure to work on. So, once the date is set, your doctor will give you some recommendations prior to treatment.

As with other dermal filler injections, patients should avoid alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours. Also, several days before the procedure, you should avoid using topical agents such as retinol, glycolic acid, and other anti-ageing products.

If you are taking daily supplements, including aspirin, ibuprofen-like medications, and blood thinners, you must tell your doctor and temporarily stop them to diminish the chance of bruising.

What Is the Chin Filler Procedure Like?

The treatment is usually very quick, taking between 15 and 30 minutes. Chin filler treatments are relatively simple procedures performed in an office or clinic.

First, your doctor will mark you up and use a needle or cannula technique to place the dermal filler at various levels of the soft tissues of the chin. He will use 1-3 injection points above the bone and in the layers just below the skin. The idea is to avoid blood vessels and nerves.

Every chin filler treatment is different depending on the shape you desire and what best suits you. Also, the amount of filler varies from patient to patient, though you will need 2 to 3 ml on average. Other patients could require up to 4 to 6 ml in one or more sessions.

The filler can be injected on the underside of the chin to elongate it and help with jawline definition. Conversely, injecting filler in the anterior chin area helps treat the chin crease and frowning of the lip muscles.

Do Chin Fillers Hurt?

While surgical procedures may require a general anaesthetic, injectable treatments do not, but that doesn’t mean that you will experience pain.

Most dermal filler products contain lidocaine, a form of local anaesthesia to help with minor pain. At most, you may feel a prickling sensation or minimal discomfort as the needle enters your skin.

Of course, it also depends on your pain threshold. The procedure might be highly uncomfortable for some patients if the filler is injected deep, near to the bone.

Hence, your doctor may apply a topical numbing cream around the treatment area for 15-20 minutes or do a nerve block injection to make the process as pleasant as possible.

Are There Any Side Effects of Chin Fillers?

Chin fillers are a safe procedure, and the risks are very low. However, as with any dermal filler treatment, there is the chance of swelling and bruising for 2-3 days.

Also, though very rare, there is the risk of migrations, lumpiness, or skin damage due to accidental injection into a blood vessel (more likely when performed by inexperienced practitioners). That’s why you must put yourself in the hands of a medical professional.

Non-surgical Chin Augmentation Aftercare

Beyond a bit of tenderness and swelling, patients can return to their daily routine right away. However, doctors recommend keeping hydrated, avoiding makeup, and exercising for 24 hours. Hard chewing should be avoided too.

You can expect to start seeing the final results once the fillers have settled after two weeks.

How Long Do Chin Fillers Last?

Results from hyaluronic acid filler can last between 9 – 12 months, even 15 months, but you will need to book additional touch-up sessions to maintain your results. However, thicker products injected more deeply may last longer.

Remember: chin fillers are not permanent!

Are There Other Options? Chin Fillers Vs. Chin Implants

If patients want dramatic and permanent results, they can choose between a fat graft procedure or permanent chin implants.

Indeed, there are other options to improve your jawline or chin appearance. However, they can be costly, painful, invasive, or not offer you long-lasting results.

Chin augmentation surgery could be a permanent solution if you have a small or weak chin. Nevertheless, as with any upper body surgery, chin implants are performed under general anaesthesia and come with a long and painful recovery.

Also, you could try Coolsculpting to freeze and kill the fat cells, causing an apparent slim down of the jaw and neckline. Or, you could try Aqualyxwhich is an injection to dissolve fat cells. Still, these procedures don’t offer any guarantees or long-lasting results and require multiple sessions.
