Calf liposuction

Calf liposuction is a very effective and non-invasive procedure for calf reduction. Thick calves, also called “cankles,” are not a flattering body feature. They can make you hide behind wide pants, avoid short skirts or the latest trendy boots.

Indeed, many women suffer from bulky calves and wish they could reduce their size and improve their shape. After all, who doesn’t dream of thinner, slender, and more feminine-looking calves, especially when using high heels?

But rest assured because thanks to liposuction, you could eliminate the excess fat present in the lower leg and get a nicely shaped pair of calves that doesn’t hinder your wardrobe choices.

This procedure can sculpt your lower legs, bring out the musculature of the calves and define a fine ankle. Actually, both calf and ankle liposuction are usually performed at the same time to ensure that the lower leg proportions are maintained.

So, are you the right candidate for this procedure? What is the difference with calf reduction? Are there other options? Keep reading to find out and get one step closer to having beautifully sculpted calves!

Even though bulkiness in the calves is mainly caused by muscle, there are many cases in which excess fat builds up in the calves, making them look bigger. In these cases, a calf liposuction is an excellent option for patients who want to reduce its size and improve their appearance.

The excess of fat in this area tends to distort the overall legs contour. It can appear even if you are not overweight and exercise regularly. After all, you can´t fight genetics!

Also, these stubborn pockets of fat can be due to medical disorders like lipoedema. The patients concerned with this problem suffer from an abnormal build-up of fat in the legs that can even be painful and disabling.

Also, with overdeveloped calves can come circulatory problems and chronic oedema. So, liposuction can address cosmetic concerns as well as medical ones.

Although this procedure can’t be advertised as a ‘cure’ for lipoedema. Since not enough is known about the disorder yet, it can be considered a procedure that improves mobility and self-esteem in patients with this fat disorder.

Calf liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure to remove permanently the fat of the calf area, sculpting a slender shape.

However, it is not a quick fix for obesity. The procedure removes stubborn pockets of fat that can’t otherwise be eliminated through diet and exercise.

There are other options available to reduce calf size and circumference. Ones are more invasive and effective than others. They go from Botox to calf reduction surgery.

Both liposuction and calf reduction surgery aim to slim down your lower leg. However, calf reduction surgery slims the calf itself by cutting away part of the muscle, also known as the gastrocnemius, to reduce its size.

Muscle resection is considered radical and aggressive. Also, it is a surgical option not widely known and has had varied results over the years, even though it has become a popular trend among Asian women. So, if a less muscular look is your goal, or you suffer from muscular hypertrophy, this surgery might not be right for you!

The main benefits are:

  1. It can immediately remove fat and offers a more harmonious calf silhouette.
  2. It is a minimally invasive procedure that requires small incisions, leaving minor scars.
  3. The plastic surgeon performs the procedure under local anaesthesiawith sedation, avoiding the risks associated with general anaesthesia.
  4. No hospital stay and minimal downtime.

However, some of the disadvantages are:

  1. The results are affected by weight gain, aging, and pregnancy.
  2. It does not improve the appearance of cellulite or sagging skin.
  3. It is not a weight-loss procedure.
  4. This procedure ONLY removes fat. It is useless in the case of muscle hypertrophy.

Calf liposuction after

The clinical examination allows the cosmetic surgeon to verify the fatty character of the calves. An accurate assessment of the silhouette is also essential. The consultation helps to get all the information necessary to choose the best treatment for you.

Moreover, you will receive documentations with all the elements for your decision. It is the session where you will be able to ask additional questions regarding the liposuction procedure.

A personalized sheet summarizes the post-operative advice and prescriptions. As a cosmetic procedure, your health insurance will not cover any liposuction of the calves and ankles. Therefore, you will receive a cost estimate.

A blood test is essential. A pre-operative anaesthetic consultation is scheduled 48 hours before your admission. Furthermore, the anesthesiologist will explain to you all the modalities of the procedure.

The cosmetic surgeon will not recommend smoking before the intervention. Moreover, all medications that contain aspirin are forbidden. The patient needs to fast for at least 6 hours before the intervention.

Your surgeon will introduce cannulas with a rounded tip through small incisions. The instruments connect to a closed circuit in which there is negative pressure. It allows the fat cells present in the calves to be sucked out.

The removal of fat must be performed in a circular and regular movement. It respects the layers of fat under the skin to avoid possible irregularities. The amount of fat removed must adapt to the quality of the skin above the treated area. Thus, the skin is a determining factor in the quality of the result.

As the specialists use exceptionally fine cannulas, the skin’s appearance improves by the skin retraction following the healing process. Liposuction of the calves must respect the harmony between the relief of the twin muscles and the ankle. The surgeon performs a sculpture of the calf.

You will see the first results immediately after the operation. The calves lose volume, the ankles are more refined, and the legs look harmonious. However, it will be necessary to wait 4 to 6 months for the swelling to subside to see the results.

The scars are not very visible. They measure about 5 millimetres and hide in the natural folds of the skin behind the knee and ankle. Their final result will be visible 12 months after the operation.

When planning a liposuction of the calves, cost should not be your main criteria. Some cosmetic surgeons charge lower fees but their results are not the expected.

The surgeon’s skills and the assurance of obtaining the desired results should be considered first. Surgery cost depends also on the amount of fat removed. Every procedure is personal to you and to your needs, and so is the cost.

Since we know that cost is important, we welcome you to visit Antiaging Group Barcelona facilities for a free, no-obligation visit. You’ll have time to consult with the plastic surgeon, ask questions, and talk about any concerns.
